Introductory Note to Shigehiko Hasumi Tribute Dossier
|
The following four essays comprise those contributions
to a recent (July 2016), celebratory book published in Japan – A Collection of Essays on Shigehiko Hasumi, edited by
Yoko Kudo for Hatori Shoten – which were originally written in English. The
complete book, in Japanese, considers many other aspects of Hasumi’s output over the years, with special emphasis on his study of literature. All
four of the following essays appear here for the first time in English, apart
from an extract of Martin’s piece that appeared in MUBI Notebook to mark Hasumi’s 80th birthday. Our thanks to the publisher and editor of A Collection of Essays on Shigehiko Hasumi, and to
Tetsuya Miura who kindly facilitated this exchange. As a bonus, we add
Earl Jackson’s English translation of Hasumi’s 1986
essay on Naruse, which is repinted here with the author’s permission.
